The history of Aikido
Created by Morihei Ueshiba, primarily during the late 1920s, Aikido is a modern Japanese Martial Art known as a basis for both physical and spiritual development. Aikido, interpreted as ‘the way of harmony of spirit, is a method of self-defence by which an attacker’s aggressive force can be turned against itself. Techniques such as joint immobilisation and throws develop practitioner’s coordination, balance and quick reactions, that can prove useful in a real life situation if necessary.
Weapons Training
Weapons training in Aikido focuses on disarming, with skills traditionally taught using jo staffs, bokkens and tantos. Practicing with weapons offers practitioner’s an insight into the origin of techniques and movements, reinforcing the concepts of distance, timing, footwork and coordination when training with others.
